Welcome to Somewhere in Time

Productions

“All of the performers are very strong. I’m going out on a limb and saying that this was the most effective cast I’ve seen in the Fredericksburg area in my almost four years of play-going here.” – Dennis Wemm, FXBG Advance

Characters:

FRANK TURNER, ESQ. African American, 20s – 30s. Role requires an actor who can sing. If you can play an instrument (violin, viola, guitar, harmonica, etc) that would be a bonus. Recorded music is an option. FRANK is highly principled. He feels education is the path to freedom and success. Defying the law, he has taught an enslaved woman, HATTIE ROSE, how to read. To his surprise, he has fallen in love with his student, which thwarts his plan to never become attached to anyone on the plantation. While HATTIE ROSE is tested on her lessons in math, history and literature, FRANK is bewildered by the life-changing lessons HATTIE ROSE will teach him.

BERTHA, 30s-50s, confidante and “mother figure,” to HATTIE ROSE. BERTHA stands tall despite the blows slavery has inflicted upon her. There’s fortitude in her carriage, and intelligence gleam in her dark, expressive eyes. As HATTIE ROSE steps out of her comfort zone to tread new waters, BERTHA remains steadfast to catch her if she falls or holds her hand as she stands on the brink of momentous change into an unknown world.

Note: This is a four character play. The roles of HATTIE ROSE and PAP (LEWIS) have been cast.
