7) A. Steal Away has a double meaning. The lyrics suggests heaven is the destination, but heaven is a code word for freedom.
8) A. Romantic love between the enslaved was an act of resistance. Enslavers often chose mates for the people they enslaved without regard of their personal feelings.
9) C. The diary belonged to the enslavers’ daughter. Black and white children played together until they were six or seven, and were compelled to act according to the racial hierarchy of white supremacy. In this story, Hattie Rose and Missy continued their relationship, becoming confidants in spite of how they were socialized.
10) B. The Underground Railroad operated for 80 years, from 1780 to 1865.
